Moving an MFP: How to do it safely.

We offer a service to safely move your MFPs and other devices

MFPs are not small machines you can easily move around. They can be extremely heavy and have delicate internal parts that require expert handling.

At Weaver Bomfords, our service technicians have decades of experience transporting machines safely and understand the risks of improper handling. We do not recommend doing it yourself and encourage you to contact us if you need to move your machines.  Our service ensures that your devices are transported safely and reconfigured correctly without any risk to you or your staff.

If you attempt to move devices yourself and an accident happens, you will be liable for any repairs or service that are subsequently required.

However, if you do ever need to relocate or move your printer to a different space or prepare it for transport, it's still important you know how to do it safely.  Here are some helpful steps to protect your device when moving it yourself.

Tips for moving your MFP safely

Read the instructions

Different manufacturers offer a variety of MFPs with varying styles and capabilities. As a result, there may be slight differences in how to handle them. Your MFP user manual should have instructions on how to safely move your device or search manufacturer knowledge base articles for your specific model.

Wherever possible, use a professional removal company, especially where any kind of steps or changes of level are involved.

Let the device cool

Always turn off your printer and unplug it before attempting to move it. Allow time for the fuser to cool and make sure that the device is no longer warm.

Remove accessories and contents

Remove any paper or other media from the output tray. If the output tray extension is open, close it. Remove any paper from the paper trays.

Toner cartridges do not need to be removed, but toner spills can happen within the device and can be time consuming to remove.  If you are moving the printer over a long distance, consider removing toners and imaging units to prevent this from happening.

You should remove all accessories before wrapping or moving the copier.  That means removing external paper trays and unplugging any cords.  Make sure the cords and accessories are securely stored and moved with the device as they can be expensive to replace.

Please note, if your MFP has a finisher attached, we do not recommend moving the device yourself.

Make the device secure

You should secure or tape the ADF to prevent the glass plate from cracking.

If paper trays are not removed, these should be taped to prevent them from opening.

If you are moving the device in a vehicle, it's a good idea to wrap it for transport using bubble wrap, card or blankets. However the device should not be lifted or moved any distance when packaged as it prevents proper lifting.

Keep it upright

Always move your copier in the upright position.  Use a moving dolly or hand truck to transport it and make sure that any moving equipment is of the correct size and weight capacity for the device.

Do not tilt the printer more than 10 degrees in any direction when moving it. Tilting the printer more than 10 degrees can cause toner spillage and can cause damage to the printer or adversely affect print quality.

Do not lift the MFP incorrectly as it can damage the frame of the device which can be difficult to repair.
